Joining and leaving a community
How to join, what notifications you get, and what happens when you leave.
Last updated
Joining
Open any community and select Join. For a public community that is all there is to it. For a private one you need an invite.
You can find communities from Communities in the sidebar, from search, or from the recommendations on your home page.
Notifications from a community
Each community has a bell control on its page. Turning it on notifies you about new posts there. It is off by default — otherwise joining a busy community would flood you.
This is separate from muting. The bell controls whether new posts notify you; muting a community from a post's ⋯ menu hides that community's posts from your feed entirely. Two different controls, easily confused.
Leaving
Select Joined on the community page and confirm. Leaving removes the community's posts from your feed. Your posts and comments stay — they belong to the discussion, not to your membership.
One exception: if you are the community's only admin, you cannot leave. Someone has to be able to run it. Promote another admin first, or ask a platform admin for help.
Undoing a mute
If you muted a community and want it back, go to Settings → Community, where muted communities are listed with an undo.
